How much does a private ADHD assessment cost? We checked 20 UK clinics
Search for the cost of a private ADHD assessment and you'll find a lot of rough ranges. We wanted real numbers, so we went through the websites of 20 UK ADHD clinics and recorded every price they publish: assessment, titration, prescriptions, reviews and payment options. Here's what we found, and what the headline price usually leaves out.
The short answer
An adult assessment on its own typically costs between £800 and £1,000. But the assessment is only the first step. If medication is right for you, titration, prescriptions and an annual review can more than double what you pay in the first year.
Assessment prices
Of the 20 clinics we checked, 14 published an adult assessment price on their own website and 9 published a child assessment price.
| Lowest | Middle | Highest | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult assessment | £289 | ~£920 | £1,195 |
| Child assessment | £499 | £995 | £1,395 |
Most adult prices cluster between £800 and £1,000. A couple of clinics charge under £400, and the most expensive sit just under £1,200. Child assessments cost more, usually because they involve more questionnaires and input from parents and school.
Why prices vary so much
Who assesses you
Assessments are carried out by consultant psychiatrists, specialist nurses or psychologists. Psychiatrists usually cost more, but they can diagnose and prescribe. Psychologists can diagnose but can't prescribe, so you'd need a separate prescriber if you want medication.
Online or in person
Most assessments now happen by video, and in-person appointments tend to cost more. One clinic we checked charges £695 online and £1,095 for the same adult assessment in person.
Whether you already have a diagnosis
Some clinics offer a shorter, cheaper appointment if you've already been diagnosed and just need treatment or a review. Make sure you're comparing like with like.
What's bundled in
Some prices include the written report, a follow-up to finish the assessment, and letters to your GP. Others charge separately. One of the clinics we checked adds a screening fee on top of the headline price, and another charges £200 to send a shared care request to your GP.
Titration: the hidden cost
Titration is the stage where you start ADHD medication at a low dose and adjust it over several weeks, with regular check-ins, until it's right. It's essential if you want medication, and it's the part of the price clinics are least clear about.
Only 4 of the 20 clinics we checked published a full titration package price. Those packages ranged from £750 to £995, covering roughly 12 weeks to 12 months of reviews and prescriptions. The rest either charge per appointment, typically £180 to £250 a time, or don't publish a price at all.
Prescriptions and reviews
While a private clinic is prescribing, you'll usually pay two things: a fee to the clinic for issuing each prescription, and the cost of the medicine at the pharmacy.
- Prescription fees ranged from £25 to £95 per prescription across the clinics that published one
- Medicine is paid at the pharmacy. One clinic estimates £25 to £150 a month, depending on the medication
- Annual reviews cost £165 to £250 where published
Once you're on a stable dose, your specialist can ask your GP to take over prescribing through shared care. If your GP agrees, you pay the standard NHS prescription charge, currently £9.90 per item in England, instead. Several clinics include the shared care request in their price. Read our guide to shared care and what to do if your GP says no.
What it adds up to
Using the middle published price for each stage, a typical first year looks like this:
That's around £1,880 before prescription fees and medicine. If your GP accepts shared care quickly, the extra might be small. If they don't, private prescriptions can add several hundred pounds a year.
Extra costs to ask about
- Is the written report included?
- Are there screening or registration fees on top?
- Is a follow-up to complete the assessment included?
- What's the titration total, and what if you need extra appointments?
- Is there a charge for the shared care request or GP letters?
- Do you need to buy equipment, such as a blood pressure monitor?
- What are the cancellation and refund terms?
Paying for it
Only 3 of the 20 clinics we checked offered a payment plan. One offered 3 months interest-free, but its 12 and 24-month plans carried 29.9% APR, which adds a lot to the total. Private medical insurance usually excludes ADHD. Our guide to how to pay for private healthcare explains every option and what to watch out for.
How we checked
In October 2026 we reviewed the websites of 20 UK providers offering private ADHD assessment, including clinics that take Greater Manchester referrals and the larger national online services. We recorded only prices each provider published on its own website. Where a page contradicted itself, we used the price in the main fee table. We don't name individual clinics' prices here, because prices change often and some pages were unclear.
Prices are a snapshot and will change. Always confirm the current cost with a clinic before you book. We plan to repeat this check regularly.

Common questions
How much does a private ADHD assessment cost in the UK?
Of the 20 UK clinics we checked in October 2026, 14 published an adult assessment price on their website. Prices ranged from £289 to £1,195, and the middle price was around £920. Child assessments ranged from £499 to £1,395.
Does the assessment price include medication?
Usually not. Titration (finding the right medication and dose) is normally charged separately, either as a package or per appointment. Medication itself is paid for at the pharmacy on top.
How much does ADHD titration cost privately?
Only 4 of the 20 clinics we checked published a full titration package price, ranging from £750 to £995. Others charge per appointment, typically £180 to £250 each, or don't publish a price at all.
Is a cheaper ADHD assessment worse?
Not necessarily, but check what's included. Cheaper prices can mean a shorter appointment, no prescribing, or extra charges later for reports, titration or shared care requests. Check who is assessing you and that the assessment follows NICE guideline NG87.
Can I pay for a private ADHD assessment monthly?
Some clinics offer payment plans, but only 3 of the 20 we checked did. Interest-free plans tend to be short, and longer finance can carry high interest, so check the total amount you'll repay.
Will my GP take over the cost of medication?
Possibly. Once you're on a stable dose, your specialist can ask your GP to take over prescribing through shared care, so you pay the standard NHS prescription charge instead. GPs don't have to agree, so it's worth asking your practice before you book.
